Compatibility matters

Door-entry handsets are not universal. A similar-looking replacement can use different terminal functions, call voltages or wiring. Send a clear front photograph and any model label before buying a handset.

03

One flat or a communal fault?

Ask a neighbour whether their handset works. If only one flat is affected, the handset or local wiring is more likely. If several flats are affected, the entrance panel, power supply or common wiring may need building-owner access.

Questions before you enquire

Common questions

Can you identify my handset from a photo?

Often. Upload the handset front, any model label and a clear view of the terminals only if the cover is already safely accessible. Do not disconnect shared-system wiring just for a photograph.

Can I buy a universal handset myself?

Some universal models cover several analogue systems, but they still need to be configured and wired for the existing call type. Compatibility should be checked first.

Will I need the factor or landlord?

Not always for an individual handset, but access to communal panels, power supplies or shared wiring normally needs permission from the owner, landlord or factor.

What should I send with the enquiry?

Send the full postcode, what works, whether neighbours are affected, and up to three photographs of the handset, label and entrance panel.

Send the scope, not a perfect specification

We need enough information to choose the right route. The exact product can follow after the building, fault and access requirements are understood.
